Game 6: Giants vs. The Baseball Furies

Game 6 was an exciting game. The Giants played their best game of the season so far by putting together an impressive 20 to 4 win over the Baseball Furies.

1st Inning (2-0)

In the top of the 1st, the Giants scored two runs off a single by Arturo, four walks (Timmy, Shaquille, Daniel, Andrew), and a sacrifice by Max.

The Furies failed to score in the first. After walking the first batter, Max struck out the two and three hitters and enduced a grounder to second base for the last out.

2nd Inning (3-0)

The Giants scored one in the 2nd inning on a heads-up baserunning play by Timmy after Fernando got caught in a rundown between first and second base.

In the 2nd inning, Max walked the first batter, struck out the next two, hit the following batter and then recovered nicely by striking out the nine hitter.

3rd Inning (5-0)

The Giants put two more runs on the board off of singles by Shaquille and Andrew, two walks (Daniel and Michelle), and a sacrifice by Christopher.

Max ended the third quickly by striking out the first two batters, walking the third, and then striking out the last batter.

4th Inning (8-0)

The Giants continued to score runs adding three more in the fourth inning. Fernando started the inning by walking, Arturo then hit a triple, Shaquille, Daniel and Michelle drew walks, and Ivan singled.

Max steam rolled over the Furies in the fourth inning by making the first batter ground out to the pitcher and then striking out the next two.

5th Inning (17-2)

In what seemed like a never-ending inning, the Giants scored nine runs in the 5th. The team drew four walks (Fernando(x2), Daniel, and Michelle). They also hit six singles (Arturo(x2), Max, Andrew, Ivan, and Davon).

The Furies were able to get two points on the board in the 5th even though they didn’t get any hits. The first batter flied out to Daniel who made a great catch. Max walked four, hit a batter, and struck out two.

6th Inning (20-4)

Continuing to score runs in every inning, the Giants score three more in the sixth off of four walks (Daniel, Michelle, Fernando, and Max), and singles by Andrew and Arturo.

The Furies could only scored two in the bottom of the sixth by walking twice and hitting a single and a double. Arturo came in relief for Max in the middle of the sixth who had thrown 85 pitches.

Giants Postgame

The Giants struckout ten times, walked 19 times, hit 14 singles and one triple. Overall the team hit and ran the bases very well (Thanks to third base coach Jonathan). On Defense, Max had another dominating performance striking out 12 batters. The rest of the team backed him up well the few times the Furies were able to put the ball in play. The player of the game was Arturo who hit four singles and a triple. Great hitting!

Since losing their second game, the team has won three and had another game interrupted to be completed another day. Hopefully the team will carry the momentum from Saturday’s win to their next game versus the Tigers. As always, Let’s Go Giants!

Practice 7

Practice 7 will be on Monday, July 14th at 6:00 pm. The purpose of practice 7 is to learn to defend third base in tag and force play situations. The team will be covering third base in force situations, catching fly balls in the outfield, tagging up and running from second to third base.

LIC YMCA Strong Kids Card

Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s),

As part of the YMCA of Greater New York’s commitment to improving the health and fitness of New York City’s children we have created the “Strong Kids Card”. This “Card” allows any child from ages 5-17 that is currently registered and participates in a YMCA program, to participate in free additional structured recreational activities at their local YMCA.

If your child currently participates in the Long Island City YMCA Virtual Y After-School Program, Jr. Knicks, swimming lessons, Pre-K, Afterschool Program, sports clinics or leagues, karate, Teen Club, and other youth programs, he/she will be eligible to participate in the Strong Kids Card Program.

Beginning, Saturday, May 10, 2008, this program will offer specific activities and times where your child will be allowed to use his/her “Strong Kids Card” at the Long Island City YMCA. The card also allows the child to bring his/her parents and siblings to our YMCA during the specific assigned activities and times listed below. The following is a list of scheduled activities currently available at the Long Island City YMCA as part of the “Strong Kids Card” Program.

3:00 pm – 7:00 pm in the Teen Center

4:30 pm – 6:30 pm in the Multi-Purpose room

This initiative is funded through a grant from the JP Morgan Chase Foundation and the YMCA Strong Kids Campaign. To register your child for a YMCA Strong Kids Card, please complete the registration form in the back of the enclosed brochure and send it with your child to their YMCA program. We will then take a picture and give them their own Strong Kids Card. Once they have the card, they will be able to use it to participate at the LIC YMCA during the designated days and times of the Strong Kids Card activities.

Nike Baseball Equipment Showcase

On Saturday, July 12, 2008 from 8:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. Nike will be at Queensbridge Park with a baseball equipment showcase for the players and their parents. There will be a small area where participants can play catch with the gloves which will be on display and practice their swing with a tether ball. There will also be a table set-up to display other items such as cleats, batting helmets, and catcher equipment. Nike will present a donation of equipment to the league itself and some children may be part of a photo opportunity for the league. After the donation ‘ceremony’ Nike will stay for the games and let the children and their parents, spectators, and passers by participate in the Nike equipment trials. Nike may also set aside some free giveaways for the children like wristbands, baseballs, and batting gloves which will be passed out to whoever participates. This is a 100 % free program for any and all participants and spectators who decide to come and take a look. Please keep in mind that this an opportunity for our players and we expect everyone to represent the league in a positive way.

Sports Illustrated for Kids

I greatly enjoyed reading Sports Illustrated for Kids while I was growing up. I loved sports and loved to read about sports. The magazines are probably what sparked my interest in reading. I would like the team to continue reading while they are out of school and would love to introduce them to SI Kids.

Game 2: Giants vs. The Phantoms

Game 2 was another hard played game. The Giants did a good job on the field but couldn’t come up with enough hits to defeat The Nightmares, who won 11-6 in five and a half innings.

1st Inning

The Giants failed to score in the first while leaving two players on base.

On an amazing defensive play by the Giants and two strike outs by Fernando, The Phantoms were kept scoreless in the bottom of the first. Great play by Joelle and Davon to tag the runner out at third.

2nd Inning

There were no runs scored in the 2nd inning as the Phantoms pitcher struck out the side.

The Phantoms quickly took advantage by scoring seven runs on five walks, a single, and a grand slam. Fernando was able to strike out three players in the second inning.

3rd Inning

The Giants bounced back in the third scoring six runs off of singles by Andrew and Ivan, and seven walks.

The bottom of the third went quickly and without any runs thanks to an out on a fowl bunt, a strikeout, and a pop-up to Fernando.

4th Inning

In the 4th, Davon got on base with a single, but the Giants couldn’t bring him in to score.

The Phantoms, however, scored four more on five walks and a couple of fielder’s choice.

5th Inning

Despite a double and some heads up base running by Timmy that landed him on third base, the Giants could not score in the fifth inning.

Giants Postgame

The Giants fielding improved over their last start. They also reached base on 10 walks and four hits but left nine players on base, striking out 15 times. Hopefully the Long Island City Giants can take a page from the New York football Giants who began the season 0-2 but then went on to win six straight games and eventually win the Super Bowl.
